BPKSA Involvement

1What do you guys do?

We try to make the department a better place for undergrads like you. Whether it’s by organizing social or academic events, or by working to implement changes to the degree programs that benefit students, we try to make your time at SFU more worthwhile.

As far as event planning goes, the fall semester has traditionally been focused on the Welcome Back Barbecue and generating interest for the Terry Fox Run. We may plan additional events as well! In previous years, we have organized semin3ars by the Canucks strength and conditioning coach, Roger Takahashi, or host of Spike TV’s Deadliest Warrior, Geoff Desmoulin. After that, we start to get the wheels turning on planning our largest annual event, Careers in BPK.

The summer semester is typically quiet compared to fall and spring, and the only event we have is the Summer Kin Cup. During meetings, we begin to plan fall events including the new BPK 101!

Will I fit in?10

Absolutely! Its normal to feel a bit intimidated the first time you come to a meeting. You know how it is when you show up to some kind of group when everyone else already knows each other. It’s cool, though! We were all in that exact same place at our first meeting, so don’t sweat it. Even if you don’t know much about what’s going on at first, or you feel that you don’t have many suggestions to offer, come say hi! You’ll likely make some new friends by getting involved.

Great! How can I get involved?4

Good question; glad you asked! The best way is to come to our regular meetings. At the beginning of each term we pick a meeting time for the semester that accommodates as many people as possible. Typically we meet weekly, because the next event is always just around the corner. If you can’t make it to meetings during a given semester due to scheduling conflicts or something like that, you can still be involved via email. Get on the mailing list to keep up with the meeting minutes, and give us feedback when you’re able.

See you there!

  1. I’m interested in being part of the BPK student association and would like to be on the mailing list. Do I need to email for that? How do I sign up?

    1. Hi Kashish,

Just send an e-mail to ksa@sfu.ca with your SFU e-mail address and ask to be put on the mailing list! If you’re interested in attending meetings, just keep an eye out for an e-mail announcing the date and time of our first meeting, that should be going out in the next week or so!
