Open Issues:

1) Approval of Previous Minutes
– Josh motioned to approve the meeting minutes of 2021-02-02. Nicole seconded.

Minutes approved unanimously.

2) Discover BPK
– Debrief the event

o Overall positive outcome!
o We had around 75-80 participants
o Participants seem to have found the event very helpful

▪ Feedback seems to be positive. This style of event (panel style) might be good to implement in future Discover BPK events even if we go back to in-person events.

▪ People seemed to really enjoy the Zoom backgrounds

• Unfortunately, not all devices/computers are able to handle the capabilities needed to set a virtual background

o BPKSA members who attended felt that the event was a good length. Some BPKSA members felt a bit of Zoom fatigue, but only a small amount.

o Anastasia and Nicole (the event moderators) felt that going through the questions during the event was a bit difficult and stressful but overall it was manageable

▪ If we do this type of event in the future, it may be a good idea to have at least 2 moderators or it could become very difficult for just one moderator to handle.

o Ben noticed there is a function on Zoom called ‘Zoom webinar’
▪ This may be worth looking into if we run a similar event in the future

– Reimbursement
o Speakers have been sent their $20 gift cards to Starbucks o We motioned to reimburse Nicole for this.

3) Reading Week Event(s) with Science DSUs – Promotion of the event

4) Clothing
– Reimbursements

o Reimburse to Ben. See motion.

5) Spring Events

  • –  We could do a series of mini-events/challenges over a time period (ie. a one weekperiod)
o We could aim to hold this event sometime in March

    ▪ Possible 2nd, 3rd, or 4th week of March o Online Intermural

    o Movement Challenge ▪ Teams

    o Event ideas:
    ▪ Photo contest / challenge

  • –  Year-end party

o The last day of classes is April 16th. We are thinking we should do this event

before the last day. Otherwise, we might want to do the year-end party after

exam period
o If we hold the event during or after exam period, we have to consider that all our

grants and information must be submitted by the deadline (April 30th)

  • ▪  Last day of exams is April 28th.
  • ▪  We would have to hold a BPKSA meeting to submit everything on April29th
  • ▪  We would also have to ensure all participants who get gift cards fill intheir forms for prizes

– Schedule Elections
o Elections must be held somewhere in the timeframe of weeks 7 – 10 o We should plan to have elections in early March.
o We are tentatively looking at March 2nd. If not, we could do March 9th.

6) SUS/DSU/SFSS Updates – Pass / Fail measure

o It is up to each individual department whether they want to extend this option to all courses or not

o Currently the BPK department is only offering this for elective courses. Thus this measure is currently not having a large effect on students who are intended BPK majors, as most courses they take are core courses.

▪ The BPK department does have the option to extend the Pass / Fail measure to required courses

• Does the department know about this option? o No.

o Nicole will discuss it with Max
o BPKSA members overall think it would be good to offer

BPK students the pass option to all courses. BPKSA members also feel it is important that BPK students are aware of how taking a Pass may affect grad school applications.

– Burnaby Mountain Gondola
o DSUs are being asked to send a letter to city council signing off / requesting the

gondola to be implemented
o What are the BPKSA’s thoughts on this?

  • ▪  The Gondola could help prevent issues on snow days
  • ▪  Potentially the Gondola can help move more people
  • ▪  Some concerns are that putting a Gondola up Burnaby mountain mayleave an impact
  • ▪  We will take a poll on this topic.6) Miscellaneous

– Any Research Day updates for the BPKSA?

o Nothing yet
o Josh will send a reminder email
