Minutes – August 1, 2018

Opening:

The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 12:30pm by Crystal in the BPK Conference Room. Minimum quorum of 4 executive members reached.

Open Issues:

1) Approval of Previous Minutes

  • Riley motioned to approve the meeting minutes of 2018-07-23. Arshpreet seconded. Minutes approved unanimously

 

2) BPK 101

  • Thursday September 13th, 11:30 -1:30 (tentative)
    • Will put up a doodle poll to have a better idea what works with people
  • ask Brent (TA) and Diana (Prof) to speak
    • Possibly Ryan Dill – BPK 142, Natalie – TA BPK 142, Amanda – TA BPK 207, Raymond – undergrad TA BPK 326, Leanne Ramer – BPK 326, Matt – TA BPK 407 and 142
  • Darleen will do a small talk about BPK co-op during the event
  • BPK Peer Mentorship is going to do a kick off event for incoming first year students the week before school starts (tours, help find classes, icebreakers, etc.)
  • BPKSA member intro (15min) to discuss things to do and get involved in around campus during first year icebreakers
    • introducing everyone (15 min)
    • interesting fact about each person, human knot game (15 min)
    • BPK/anatomy questions and models -> possibly in the Anatomy lab
    • Prof & TA speakers (20min)
  • Can do extra icebreakers if there’s extra time
    • Rock-paper-scissor evolution
    • Cookie game
  • ask Diane (Faculty of Science) for Science swag and the department for BPK swag
  • looking into purchasing some swag items:
    • About $160 for 80 draw bags
    • $207 for 300 click pens
    • $217 for 150 round stress balls or $208 for 150 heart stress balls
    • $230 for 200 for ruler with sticky notes
    • lanyards or keychains

 

3) #XOSFU Card Decorating

  • we’ll continue to decorate cards for incoming students

 

4) #XOSFU Event

  • September 5th in the BPK Student Lounge, around 10am
  • cookies and coffee
  • the department is looking into funding the event

 

5) Wings Night

  • postponing it until October so we don’t overcrowd events in September

 

6) Welcome Back BBQ Kickoff

  • will advertise earlier in the semester to help with turn out
  • email the Cardiac Lab – Peter Ruben, Glen Tibbits, Damon Poburko, Tom Claydon
  • email Altitude Lab – Andrew Blaber
  • Email biomechanics – Max Donelan
  • Aging lab – Dawn Mackey
  • Sensorimotor lab

 

7) Concussion Legacy Foundation

  • A group from Canada and US that have student-run groups from universities that go into the community to do outreach info sessions at high schools
  • Determine if we want to establish this group as a SFU club
    • will train people who are interested
    • Possibly involve healthcare professionals as speakers
  • BNSS is interested, possibly involve other clubs related to the BPK department to help better advertise to people

 

8) World Cup Pool Results

  • 1st place (Vic) Claydon Cardiovascular Physiology Lab
  • 2nd place Tony
  • 3rd Place Jim

 

9) Sensorimotor Neuroscience Lab Research Participants

  • Amanda is looking for research participants for her lab research. It’s a 2 hour session the first week and 1 hour the second week. Email her at abakkum@sfu.caif you’re interested in participating.

 

10) Elected Positions

  • all the BPKSA elected positions open up in September. Email bpksa@sfu.caif you’re interested in running for a position.
  • Deadline: meeting after Clubs day
    • Limited to members who have been in the BPKSA for at least a semester
    • All positions are on the BPKSA website

 

11) BPKSA Retreat

  • need to motion the expenses at a later date
