Open Issues
KIN Cup
-KIN Cup is an annual tournament of the undergraduate students versus graduate students & faculty members
-this year, KIN Cup will be held on Monday March 21st, 2016 from 5:30-7:30 pm
-Debbie will talk to SFU Rec about booking East Gym for this date and time
-will include: indoor soccer, basketball, dodge ball
-last year, it cost approx. $180 to rent the east gym and $80 for the equipment rental
-once everything is fully booked, we will start promoting the event on facebook and with classroom talks
Year End Party:
-due to issues experienced last year with Club Ilia, this years Year End Party will be held at the Diamond Alumni Centre (DAC)
-Sabrina called the DAC and found out that the upper floor is available for our chosen date (March 31, 2016)
-the event has been booked through the SFSS
-need a quote for prices of food
SUS Update:
-SUS has allocated travel funds to KIN Games ($100/person)
-SUS is also hosting a social event called “Exploding Kittens” – details for this event will be provided soon, but be on the lookout for this event
-nominations are still open if anyone wants a positions in the SUS; therefore if you are interested, please apply!
SFSS Council Update
-Jake attended the SFSS Council meeting and reported back to us with an update of the meeting
-a proposal was made for the formation of a Sexual Assault Prevention and Support Centre (SAPSC) for SFU Burnaby as there is a lack of resources & accessibility of these resources for students who have experienced sexual assault
-this centre will provide support for any students who have experienced sexual assault and will also work for the prevention of sexual assault
-many other universities have centers like the one proposed already
-funding is to come from a minor increase in student fees; this center will be independent from the SFSS
-while this is an excellent idea, there were a lot of concerns raised in the council as there wasn’t much of a plan on how to move forward with the idea
-the motion was passed with most in favour & some abstaining; therefore the motion will be going to referendum for the entire student body to vote on
UPC Update:
-Erina provided us with an update from the UPC meeting
-Dr. Angela Brooks-Wilson has been elected as the new chair of BPK
-Dr. Brooks-Wilson wants to meet with the BPKSA to discuss any concerns or issues undergraduate students may have with the current state of the program
-some issues which came up during this meeting include:
-BIF majors have issues getting together upper division electives in time to
graduate (due to professors being on sabbaticals and class schedules/offerings); a solution may be to allow BIF students to take more courses in other departments (ie MBB) and count those as electives
-the UPC have been thinking about allowing more choices for upper
division electives
-if there are any issues or concerns you would like to raise regarding BPK, email Erina (erinac@sfu.ca)
Adjournment:
The meeting of the BPKSA was adjourned by Loryn at 1:20pm in room K9622. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 in room K9622.
