Friday, May 12th, 2017

 

Opening:

The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 11:33am by Megan in the BPK Conference Room (K9622).

 

In attendance:

Emily B, Brandon, Jimmy, Matthew, Alam, Ningning, Jaskarn, Erina, Megan, Parham

 

Open Issues:

Mini-Election for Executive Positions for Summer 2017

The results of the mini-election are as follows:

President: Crystal

Vice-President: Erina

Promotional Coordinator: Brandon

External Relations Officer: Emily B

SFSS Council Rep: Ningning

Brandon will set-up a new communication platform (Slack) for executive members by next meeting.

There was unanimous decision to continue summer meetings on Fridays at 11:30-12:20.

Location will be confirmed at a later time.

Walk to Fight Arthritis

1km and 5km walk to raise funds for arthritis research

Event on Sunday, June 4th, 2017

Discussion to be continued after Club Days in regards to whether to sign-up for a BPK team

 

Partnership with The Princeton Review

Unanimous decision to continue partnership with The Princeton Review

 

SFU Info Evening

BPK is looking for a BIF major to volunteer as a BIF rep for the event at the BPK table

The event is on May 25th, 2017 from 5-8pm

A light meal will be served in the pub at 3:30 for volunteers

Display table set up by 4:30

Ningning and Crystal expressed interest and will be in touch with Sophie

 

Student Mental Health

Update from the departmental KIN rep about the recent discussions held at

departmental meetings about student mental health and well-being

Sub-committee would like feedback on drafted proposals to address this concern in BPK Points mentioned include:

Mentorship

Would students feel they would a. Benefit and b. Attend a mentorship program with alumnus mentors?

How can we improve the current existing mentorship program between senior students and first year students?

Communal space for BPK students

Having a communal space for undergrads was a big topic last

meeting. We have some ideas to improve the overall BPK dept space and undergrad space.

Navigating and setting realistic plans and expectations

Academic planning – BPK 101 was a start. Can we do more?

Career planning – making a backup plan etc. Would students

benefit from transparent alumni/grad statistics from BPK?

Personal planning – time management, promoting importance of

taking care of physical, mental, social health etc.

Best Practices for professors and teaching faculty

SFU has a healthy campus community initiative with many

suggestions to professors to help better student experience:

Can we pick what the most useful ideas are from this list, from a

students’ perspective?

The feedback from BPKSA members were in favour of the drafted proposed

 

Science Peer Mentorship Program

Update from Parham about the SFSS and Faculty of Science’s plan to start a

faculty of Science-wide peer mentorship program
