Meeting Minutes

Thursday, October 1, 2015

Opening:

The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 11:30am by Loryn in the BPK Graduate Student Lounge.

In Attendance:

Loryn, Megan, Matt, Debbie, Shaila, Madison, Daniel, Jazmine, Meghan, Dan, Omid, Kirsten, Pavan, Lois

Open Issues:

1) Motions

-Loryn motioned to reimburse the BPK Department $25 for renewing our BPKSA email account. Matt seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

-Loryn motioned to reimburse Alex Lukac $308 for the Peer Mentorship Laser Tag event. Madison seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

2) Careers in BPK:

-this is our biggest event of the year held annually in January that showcases different career paths BPK students can pursue after their degree

-out of the three possible dates (Tues Jan 19th, Wed Jan 20th, Thurs Jan 21st) we think that Wed Jan 20th works best as there are lots of people up on campus for classes on Wednesdays so a better turnout is more likely

-need to start brainstorming ideas of which careers will host each of the four breakout sessions:

-Med and Physio for sure as they are always popular

-for the other two spots possibly: OT, Naturopath, Teacher, Ultrasound Tech (or another career option related to BCIT)

-we are hoping that BCIT can come out for the information session as there are a lot of program options for BPK students here after they graduate

-for each breakout session we ideally will have one current student and one professional (both BPK graduates preferably!)

-when the presenters are selected we need to make sure they have an idea of how the session will run (i.e. it is for students to learn about the career, not how to better prepare their CV. In general the presenter should prepare a 5 minute blurb on how they ended up in their current career, a typical work day, an interesting story/fact)

-we as facilitators can prepare questions ahead of time to help guide the conversation if need be

3) BPK Kickoff Debrief:

-a lot of people RSVP’ed for the event but not a lot of people ended up showing up, possible reasons why:

-maybe students had a busier day than they anticipated and decided it was too much to come

-the meeting spot was an issue because there was a First Nations Event going on in Convo Mall so it was hard for people to find us, next year we need to give a more specific meeting spot (i.e. right beside the entrance to the library) and make sure we stand out

-there was a miscommunication about the BBQ start time, next year we need to make sure that the tour schedule allows students to get to the BBQ closer to the beginning

-maybe next year we can start the Kick Off at the BBQ at 12pm and then leave for Physio/REC/Lab tours around 1pm (the afternoon may work better with the students’ schedules , mornings seem to be busier with labs and lectures)

3) Terry Fox Run

-reminder that it is this Friday!

-please register as part of Team BPK and be sure to donate

4) BPK Fall Social Event

-the second week of classes in November seems like a good time (after midterms but before final papers/exams), could potentially use the Wed Nov 11th Remembrance Day holiday to our advantage and hold the event the night before (Tues the 10th)

-we’ve done laser tag, bouldering, bowling, wings night in the past

-ideas for this year include: Extreme Air Park, archery tag, escape room (North Road location has half off on Tuesday nights but has a maximum of 25 people at a time), paintball, after hours at Science World or the Aquarium (this is a 19+ event though – could try to rent out space instead), bowling, renting out a suite or getting seats close together for a Whitecaps or Lions or Giants game

-Loryn may suggest the After Hours Aquarium /Science World idea to SUS so we can make it a faculty wide event

5) Clothing

-Matt will create a web survey that can be emailed to all BPK undergrads to see what types of clothing is most popular (i.e. would they like to see shaker bottles or water bottles? Toques? Sweatpants?) and what designs are most popular

-the email with the link should include pictures of all our current designs (heat, brain, lungs, BPK logo with ECG)

-a good point was brought up that some first years are only intended majors so they aren’t included on the email list – it may be beneficial to go to the Kin 142 class or lab to present or ask Craig to circulate the link to the 142 class email list

-last year’s pullover sweatshirts will still be offered as they have been quite popular

-we will also get our old t-shirts back as the quality was preferred

-could potentially get a new Neuro design as the brain wasn’t that popular: maybea neuron or the synaptic cleft

-we could hold a design contest and have BPK students submit ideas or Kirsten can talk to Ty who has designed for us in the past

Adjournment:

The meeting of the BPKSA was adjourned by Loryn at 12:20pm in the BPK Graduate Student Lounge. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2015 in the BPK Graduate Student Lounge.
